AssociatesAt The Boston Group, we're proud of the success our Financial Representatives have found and know that we would not be successful without them. We share their enthusiasm and drive, and are proud to foster an environment that allows our associates the opportunity to continue to grow. What does it take to become a successful financial representative? Is it a willingness to serve others? Are individuals drawn to the career because of their recognition of the value of human life? Has an internship opportunity offered a new experience and evolved into a way of life? Meet some of the members of The Boston Group. Jeffrey S Baron, CASL, ChFC®, CLU®, MBAFinancial Advisor Prior to joining the Network, Jeff worked at A.T. Kearney, an international management consulting firm dealing with Fortune 50 clients. He also ran Marketing and Business Development for a Boston-area software company. Jeff was attracted to the career because of the unlimited earnings potential, the ability to be his own boss, and the freedom and flexibility offered in the career which is far greater than if he was starting his own, more traditional, retail business. Jeff is a member of both the Boston Estate Planning Council and the Boston Chapter of The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisor (NAIFA). Jeff is actively involved in local government, and serves on multiple boards and committees in his hometown. He is also a regular columnist featured in the Wayland-Weston Town Crier. His column, Focus on Finances, is published on the last Thursday of each month. Jeff has spent most of his life in the Greater Boston area. Jeff and his wife, Deb live with their two daughters, Samantha and Ali, in Wayland, Massachusetts. Jeff enjoys golf, Patriots football and serves as chairman of a Wayland town committee. Joshua Cohen, CLU®, CLTCFinancial Representative With nearly a decade of service at The Boston Group of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network (NMFN), Josh Cohen has built a strong general practice while developing an expertise in disability income insurance. As the agency’s disability income specialist, he is often brought in to collaborate with other financial representatives whose clients may have a need for this important coverage. Josh has the tools to provide clients a wide range of financial products. The ability to offer financial solutions, coupled with the opportunity to operate his own practice under the NMFM umbrella, is what Josh finds most gratifying about his work. He has also achieved such financial service credentials as the CLU (for life underwriting) and CLTC (for long-term care coverage).
Away from the office, Josh is engaged in several professional, charitable and community activities. He has been active for several years in the Boston Estate Planning Council, and currently serves on the board of directors of Temple Beth Emunah in Brockton, Mass. Josh also devotes considerable effort each year to feeding the hungry through various aid organizations.
Additionally, Josh serves as president of the Boston Arch Alumni Club of the University of Miami. He is a member of the Presidents Circle for the University of Miami. While an undergraduate at the University of Miami, Josh served in a variety of leadership positions, including president of the Interfraternity Council.
Josh has spent his entire life on Boston’s south shore, growing up in Whitman, and living today in Stoughton with his wife Megan, and their three sons, Charlie, Teddy and Henry. He is a graduate of Miami (Fla.) University, where he majored in history. George DoranFinancial Representative Athletics have long been an integral part of George Doran's life. As an adolescent and adult, player and parent, he has never been far removed from the courts and fields of play. George grew up in Wellesley, where he played lots of tennis but gave his heart to football. Unfortunately, the game didn't love him back: after tearing up the gridiron at Wellesley High in the late '60s, George tore up his knee on the first day of football practice at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., and, like that, his pigskin career was over. He switched games and joined the tennis team, which he would ultimately co-captain and which would, in the years ahead, help set him up for life. Immediately following his graduation from Wesleyan in 1973, George joined Aetna's Boston office. He continued moonlighting as a pro at Wellesley CC, where he had the good fortune of giving a lesson to a member named Jay Stone. When he learned that George was just making his start in financial services, Jay recruited the young pro to Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Apparently, like so many peripheral skills, the ability to teach a topspin backhand can go a long way in this business. Today, George and his wife reside in Wayland much like newlyweds, now that their youngest has graduated high school and the kids have all flown the coop. He has stepped down from the Boosters, ending a very time-consuming but rewarding relationship with the High School. He has even more time now for friends, family and, of course, his successful practice at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network's The Boston Group. George still enjoys tennis and squash, and has taken to golf, a replacement-hip-friendly game, like he's played it all his life. David Feldman, CLU®, ChFC®Financial Representative A career financial representative with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network (NMFN), David Feldman has attained many important professional accomplishment and designation in more than four decades of service. He joined The Boston Group in 1968 at the suggestion of his father — a Northwestern Mutual policyholder and acquaintance of three NMFN financial representatives — who believed the career matched David’s temperament and skills. What initially drew David to NMFN was the opportunity to be rewarded in direct proportion to his productivity, as well as the impressive culture, products and associates he found at The Boston Group. Today, David considers joint work to be the teaching component of his career. He recalls the agency’s established representatives had worked closely with him as a developing financial service professional; in turn, he believes it is important to carry on that tradition, and hopes some of the younger representatives he mentors today will play this role when they are more experienced.
In addition to maintaining a successful practice, David leads one of the Boston Group’s Client Builder Study groups. This alliance, of six senior financial representatives, meets monthly to explore various business strategies in the context of ever-changing market developments and economic trends.
A two-time recipient of NMFN’s Community Service Award, winner of the Albert Gayzagian Lifetime Achievement Award from Mass Association of the Blind and a substantial grant from the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation. A Newton native, he and his wife Sydney live in Dedham, MA where they enjoy visits from their three grown sons and three grandsons. Their 4th grandchild is due in July 2010. John MaraFinancial Advisor John Mara has been a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network since 1998. John grew up in the Bedford, Massachusetts area and graduated from Merrimack College with a degree in Marketing. John joined the Network shortly after graduation when he spotted a posting for a financial representative with The Boston Group in the Merrimack career resource guide. John was attracted to the career because he thought he was interested in a sales career in the financial services industry and was looking for an opportunity where he could make a good amount of money but did not know anything about the insurance industry. He offers three suggestions for success:
John lives in Bedford, Massachusetts with his wife, Krista, and their three newborns. He enjoys being outdoors, staying active, summers on the Cape, fishing and boating. Walter MayFinancial Representative Walter May has been a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network since 1994. Walter grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts and attended Melrose High School and Boston University. He played hockey during his high school and college years. He graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Prior to joining the Network, Walter May dabbled in car sales and was later a fund accountant. He was attracted to the career through his uncle who was a financial representative with The Boston Group. He envied his uncle's lifestyle. As a Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Representative, Walter's uncle always seemed to maintain the work/life balance and quality of life we all strive for. Walter believes his career came together when he married, had children, and purchased a house—it gave him more conviction in the services and products he is able to provide to his clients. John NavienFinancial Representative John Navien has been a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network since 2005. He was referred to the career by another representative with whom he attended high school. Prior to joining the Network, John worked for another financial services company for a year and a half. John was attracted to the career because of the earnings potential, freedom and professional and successful culture in the network office. He enjoys running his own business and serving as a trusted professional to his clients. John lives in Charlestown, Massachusetts and enjoys snow boarding, working out and spending time with his godchildren.
James N PettorelliFinancial Representative James Pettorelli has been a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network since 1997. Jim grew up in Highland Park, Illinois. After graduating from the Brooks School, a private high school in North Andover, Massachusetts, Jim attended the University of Vermont where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Small Business Management. He is a member of the Boston Chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA). NAIFA is a national nonprofit organization representing the interests of more than 70,000 insurance and financial advisors nationwide, through its federation of over 900 state and local associations. Founded in 1890, NAIFA is the nation's largest financial services membership association. Jim lives in North Andover with his wife, Kerna and their son, Benjamin. He enjoys playing golf, travelling, and spending time with his family. |
